V-Bar Pulldown Guide: Technique and Form Tips

Master the V-bar pulldown with our expert guide. Learn the correct form, common mistakes to avoid, and how to build a thicker, stronger back.

How to Perform

  1. Attach a V-bar handle to the high pulley of a lat pulldown machine and sit with your thighs secured under the pads.
  2. Grasp the handles with a neutral grip so your palms face each other and extend your arms fully to feel a stretch in your lats.
  3. Lean back slightly, pull your shoulder blades down, and drive your elbows toward the floor to bring the handle to your upper chest.
  4. Squeeze your back muscles at the bottom of the movement while keeping your chest held high.
  5. Control the weight as you slowly return the handle to the starting position to maintain tension throughout the set.

Common Mistakes

  • Using momentum or excessively leaning back to cheat the weight down
  • Pulling the handle down to the stomach instead of the upper chest
  • Shrugging the shoulders up toward the ears during the contraction
  • Allowing the weight stack to slam between repetitions
