Master the Sit Up Elbow Thrust with our step-by-step guide. Learn how to target your obliques and core for better stability and midsection definition.
How to Perform
- Lie flat on your back on a supportive mat with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor about hip-width apart.
- Place your fingertips lightly behind your ears or temples, keeping your elbows flared out to the sides.
- Exhale as you engage your core to lift your upper back and shoulders off the floor in a standard sit-up motion.
- Rotate your torso at the top of the movement, driving one elbow toward the opposite knee while keeping the other elbow pinned back.
- Pause for a second at the peak of the contraction to feel the tension in your lateral abdominal wall.
- Inhale as you slowly reverse the rotation and lower your torso back to the starting position with control.
- Repeat the movement on the opposite side to complete one full repetition.
Common Mistakes
- Pulling on the neck or head with the hands
- Using momentum or swinging the arms to sit up
- Lifting the feet or heels off the ground during the ascent
- Rounding the lower back excessively rather than rotating the ribcage
