Sit Up Elbow Thrust Guide: Oblique Strength Tips

Master the Sit Up Elbow Thrust with our step-by-step guide. Learn how to target your obliques and core for better stability and midsection definition.

How to Perform

  1. Lie flat on your back on a supportive mat with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor about hip-width apart.
  2. Place your fingertips lightly behind your ears or temples, keeping your elbows flared out to the sides.
  3. Exhale as you engage your core to lift your upper back and shoulders off the floor in a standard sit-up motion.
  4. Rotate your torso at the top of the movement, driving one elbow toward the opposite knee while keeping the other elbow pinned back.
  5. Pause for a second at the peak of the contraction to feel the tension in your lateral abdominal wall.
  6. Inhale as you slowly reverse the rotation and lower your torso back to the starting position with control.
  7. Repeat the movement on the opposite side to complete one full repetition.

Common Mistakes

  • Pulling on the neck or head with the hands
  • Using momentum or swinging the arms to sit up
  • Lifting the feet or heels off the ground during the ascent
