Calf Raises with Kettlebell

A stability-focused variation designed to build lower leg power and ankle resilience using a single kettlebell.

01

How to perform.

Follow the sequence — setup is half the lift.

01

Stand upright with your feet hip-width apart and hold a kettlebell in one hand at your side with a neutral grip.

02

Engage your core and pull your shoulders back to maintain a tall, balanced posture.

03

Press through the balls of both feet to raise your heels as high as possible from the floor.

04

Pause for one second at the peak of the movement to maximize muscle fiber recruitment.

05

Lower your heels back to the ground in a controlled motion, resisting the weight on the way down.

06

Complete the set on one side before switching the kettlebell to the other hand to challenge your unilateral stability.

02

Common mistakes.

Fix these first — they cost reps, kilos, and joints.

  • Rushing the tempo and using momentum instead of controlled muscle contractions.
  • Leaning toward the weighted side rather than keeping the spine vertical.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion at the top of the lift.
  • Bending the knees during the upward phase which shifts focus away from the gastrocnemius.
03

Muscles worked.

The primary movers do the work; the stabilizers keep the path honest.
