Hip Abductor Machine Guide: Proper Form and Benefits
Master the abductor machine with our expert guide. Learn correct form, avoid common mistakes, and strengthen your outer hips for better hip stability.
How to Perform
- Sit with your back firmly against the backrest and place your feet on the footrests with your outer knees against the pads.
- Adjust the starting position of the lever arms so that you feel a slight stretch in your hips before beginning the movement.
- Grasp the handles on either side of the machine to stabilize your upper body and maintain a neutral spine.
- Exhale as you push your knees outwards against the pads in a slow and controlled motion.
- Drive the weight as far as your hip mobility allows without lifting your glutes off the seat.
- Pause for a second at the point of maximum contraction to fully engage the lateral hip muscles.
- Inhale as you slowly return the pads to the starting position without letting the weight plates touch.
Common Mistakes
- Using momentum or swinging the legs to move the weight.
- Rounding the lower back or leaning too far forward during the rep.
- Lifting the hips off the seat to generate more force.
- Selecting a weight that is too heavy to allow for a full range of motion.
