Pec Deck Machine Guide: Isolation for a Stronger Chest
Learn the correct form for the pec deck machine to isolate your chest, improve muscle definition, and avoid common shoulder injuries.
How to Perform
- Adjust the seat height so that the handles or pads are level with your mid-to-lower chest and your feet are flat on the floor.
- Sit with your back and head firmly against the pad while maintaining a slight natural arch in your lower spine.
- Grasp the handles with a neutral grip and position your elbows slightly below shoulder height to protect the rotator cuff.
- Exhale as you squeeze the handles together in a controlled arc, focusing on moving the weight with your chest rather than your hands.
- Pause for a full second at the peak of the contraction when the handles are closest together.
- Inhale and slowly reverse the motion, returning to the starting position until you feel a comfortable stretch in your chest muscles.
- Maintain a slight bend in your elbows throughout the entire set to keep the tension on the muscle belly.
Common Mistakes
- Allowing the weight stack to touch between reps which removes tension from the muscles.
- Banging the handles together at the center of the movement.
- Arching the lower back excessively or lifting the hips off the seat to move the weight.
- Letting the elbows travel too far back past the shoulders, increasing the risk of joint strain.
