Master the machine chest press with our expert guide. Learn the correct form, avoid common mistakes, and build a stronger chest with controlled movements.

How to Perform

  1. Sit with your back and head firmly against the seat padding and plant your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Adjust the seat height so the handles are level with your mid-to-lower chest and your elbows are slightly below your shoulders.
  3. Grasp the handles with a full overhand grip, keeping your wrists neutral and aligned with your forearms.
  4. Exhale as you press the handles forward until your arms are fully extended without locking out your elbows.
  5. Pause for a second at the peak of the movement to focus on the muscular contraction in your chest.
  6. Inhale as you slowly lower the weight back toward the starting position, stopping before the weight stack touches.
  7. Maintain a slight arch in your lower back while keeping your shoulder blades retracted throughout the entire set.

Common Mistakes

  • Arching the lower back excessively off the seat
  • Locking the elbows out completely at the top
  • Letting the weight stack crash down between repetitions
  • Allowing the shoulders to hunch forward during the press
