How to Perform
- Sit with your back and head firmly against the seat padding and plant your feet flat on the floor.
- Adjust the seat height so the handles are level with your mid-to-lower chest and your elbows are slightly below your shoulders.
- Grasp the handles with a full overhand grip, keeping your wrists neutral and aligned with your forearms.
- Exhale as you press the handles forward until your arms are fully extended without locking out your elbows.
- Pause for a second at the peak of the movement to focus on the muscular contraction in your chest.
- Inhale as you slowly lower the weight back toward the starting position, stopping before the weight stack touches.
- Maintain a slight arch in your lower back while keeping your shoulder blades retracted throughout the entire set.
Common Mistakes
- Arching the lower back excessively off the seat
- Locking the elbows out completely at the top
- Letting the weight stack crash down between repetitions
- Allowing the shoulders to hunch forward during the press
