Weighted Step-Ups Guide: Form, Benefits, and Technique
Master the weighted step-up to build unilateral leg strength and glute power. Learn correct form, common mistakes, and the best equipment to use.
How to Perform
- Stand facing a sturdy box or bench while holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with a neutral grip.
- Place your entire right foot firmly onto the center of the box, ensuring your heel is not hanging off the edge.
- Drive through your right mid-foot and heel to extend your leg, bringing your left foot up to meet the right on top of the box.
- Control your descent by slowly stepping back down with the left foot until it touches the floor.
- Keep your torso upright and your core engaged throughout the movement to maintain balance.
- Complete all repetitions on one lead leg before switching to the other side to maintain constant tension.
Common Mistakes
- Pushing off the floor with the trailing foot instead of using the lead leg.
- Allowing the knee of the lead leg to cave inward during the ascent.
- Leaning the torso too far forward which shifts load away from the glutes.
- Using a box that is too high, causing the hips to tilt or round the lower back.
