Weighted Step-Ups Guide: Form, Benefits, and Technique

Master the weighted step-up to build unilateral leg strength and glute power. Learn correct form, common mistakes, and the best equipment to use.

How to Perform

  1. Stand facing a sturdy box or bench while holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with a neutral grip.
  2. Place your entire right foot firmly onto the center of the box, ensuring your heel is not hanging off the edge.
  3. Drive through your right mid-foot and heel to extend your leg, bringing your left foot up to meet the right on top of the box.
  4. Control your descent by slowly stepping back down with the left foot until it touches the floor.
  5. Keep your torso upright and your core engaged throughout the movement to maintain balance.
  6. Complete all repetitions on one lead leg before switching to the other side to maintain constant tension.

Common Mistakes

  • Pushing off the floor with the trailing foot instead of using the lead leg.
  • Allowing the knee of the lead leg to cave inward during the ascent.
  • Leaning the torso too far forward which shifts load away from the glutes.
  • Using a box that is too high, causing the hips to tilt or round the lower back.
