Stationary Bike Guide: Proper Form and Technique
Learn how to master the stationary bike with proper setup, form tips, and common mistakes to avoid for improved lower body strength.
How to Perform
- Adjust the seat height so your leg has a slight five to ten degree bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
- Position the seat horizontally to ensure your front knee is directly over the pedal axle when the pedals are level.
- Place the balls of your feet in the center of the pedals and secure the straps comfortably.
- Grip the handlebars lightly while maintaining a flat back and engaged core to stabilize your upper body.
- Pedal in a smooth, circular motion by pushing down with your midfoot and pulling up slightly through the back of the stroke.
- Adjust the resistance knob to a level that allows you to maintain your target cadence without bouncing in the saddle.
Common Mistakes
- Setting the seat too low, which puts excessive pressure on the knee joints.
- Rocking the hips side to side due to excessive resistance or a seat that is too high.
- Gripping the handlebars too tightly and rounding the shoulders.
- Leaning too far forward and putting weight on the wrists instead of using the core.
