Standing IT Band Stretch Guide: Improve Hip Mobility
Learn the correct way to perform the standing IT band stretch to relieve hip tightness, reduce knee pain, and improve your lower body recovery.
How to Perform
- Stand upright with your feet together and your hands on your hips for balance.
- Cross your right leg behind your left leg, planting the right foot firmly on the floor.
- Shift your weight onto the back right leg while keeping that knee straight.
- Lean your torso toward the left side, away from the back leg, to create a stretch along the outer hip.
- Hold this position for thirty seconds while maintaining steady, deep breaths.
- Slowly return to a neutral standing position and repeat the sequence on the opposite side.
Common Mistakes
- Arching the lower back excessively during the lean.
- Allowing the front knee to collapse inward.
- Rotating the pelvis instead of keeping the hips square to the front.
- Holding the breath which increases muscle tension.
