Standing Dowel Shoulder Press Guide | Mobility Techniques
Master the standing dowel shoulder press to improve overhead range of motion and shoulder health with our expert, step-by-step coaching guide.
How to Perform
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold the dowel or lightweight bar at chest height with an overhand grip.
- Position your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width and keep your elbows tucked vertically under your wrists.
- Engage your core and glutes to maintain a neutral spine and prevent your lower back from arching.
- Press the dowel upward in a straight line, moving your head slightly back to allow the bar to clear your face.
- Extend your arms fully overhead until your elbows are locked and the bar is positioned directly over your mid-foot.
- Lower the dowel under control back to the starting position at the top of your collarbone.
Common Mistakes
- Arching the lower back excessively during the ascent
- Flaring the elbows out to the sides instead of keeping them tucked
- Pushing the bar too far forward rather than directly overhead
- Shrugging the shoulders toward the ears at the start of the movement
