Standing Calf Stretch Guide: Steps, Tips, and Benefits
Learn the correct way to perform a standing calf stretch to improve flexibility, reduce Achilles tension, and prevent lower leg injuries.
How to Perform
- Stand facing a wall with your feet hip-width apart and your hands placed against the wall at shoulder height.
- Step one foot back into a staggered stance while keeping both heels firmly planted on the floor.
- Straighten your rear leg and lean forward slightly, bending your front knee toward the wall.
- Maintain a tall posture and keep your back heel pressed down until you feel a pull along the back of your lower leg.
- Hold the position for thirty to sixty seconds while maintaining deep, controlled breathing.
- Release the tension slowly and switch legs to repeat the process on the opposite side.
Common Mistakes
- Allowing the back heel to lift off the ground
- Rounding the lower back instead of hinging at the hips
- Turning the back foot outward instead of keeping toes pointed forward
- Bouncing in the stretch rather than holding a static position
