Standing Calf Stretch Guide: Steps, Tips, and Benefits

Learn the correct way to perform a standing calf stretch to improve flexibility, reduce Achilles tension, and prevent lower leg injuries.

How to Perform

  1. Stand facing a wall with your feet hip-width apart and your hands placed against the wall at shoulder height.
  2. Step one foot back into a staggered stance while keeping both heels firmly planted on the floor.
  3. Straighten your rear leg and lean forward slightly, bending your front knee toward the wall.
  4. Maintain a tall posture and keep your back heel pressed down until you feel a pull along the back of your lower leg.
  5. Hold the position for thirty to sixty seconds while maintaining deep, controlled breathing.
  6. Release the tension slowly and switch legs to repeat the process on the opposite side.

Common Mistakes

  • Allowing the back heel to lift off the ground
  • Rounding the lower back instead of hinging at the hips
  • Turning the back foot outward instead of keeping toes pointed forward
  • Bouncing in the stretch rather than holding a static position
