Pendulum Squat Guide: Build Quad Strength and Stability

Master the bodyweight pendulum squat with our step-by-step guide. Improve your quad endurance, balance, and lower body coordination with this low-impact move.

How to Perform

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms extended in front of your chest for balance.
  2. Lower your hips into a standard squat until your thighs are parallel with the floor.
  3. Shift your weight slightly to one side and step your opposite foot out while remaining in the low squat position.
  4. Return the foot to the starting position and immediately shift to the other side in a fluid, pendulum-like motion.
  5. Maintain a consistent depth throughout the lateral shifts without standing up between repetitions.
  6. Keep your chest upright and your core engaged to stabilize the torso as you move sideways.
  7. Exhale as you push back to the center and inhale as you transition to the side.

Common Mistakes

  • Rising out of the squat depth during the lateral transition
  • Allowing the knees to cave inward while shifting weight
  • Leaning the torso too far forward which strains the lower back
  • Moving too quickly and losing control of the skeletal alignment
