How to Do Marching High Knees: Form and Benefits

Master the marching high knees exercise to improve hip mobility, strengthen your quads, and boost your heart rate with zero equipment.

How to Perform

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart and your arms relaxed at your sides.
  2. Engage your core and lift your right knee toward your chest until your thigh is parallel to the floor.
  3. Simultaneously swing your left arm forward and your right arm back to maintain balance.
  4. Lower your right foot back to the starting position with control, landing softly on the ball of your foot.
  5. Repeat the movement with your left leg, driving the knee upward while swinging your right arm forward.
  6. Continue alternating legs in a steady, rhythmic marching motion while keeping your torso upright.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaning the torso backward to compensate for limited hip mobility
  • Landing heavily on the heels instead of the mid-foot
  • Allowing the standing leg's knee to cave inward
  • Rounding the shoulders forward and losing spinal alignment
