Machine Hip Abduction Guide: Form and Benefits

Master the machine hip abduction with our expert guide. Learn proper form, avoid common mistakes, and build stronger, more stable glutes.

How to Perform

  1. Sit firmly in the machine with your back flat against the backrest and your feet on the footrests.
  2. Adjust the outer thigh pads so they are resting against the outside of your knees.
  3. Grip the handles on either side of the seat to stabilize your upper body and keep your pelvis tucked.
  4. Push against the pads using your outer thighs to spread your legs as wide as comfortably possible.
  5. Pause for a second at the point of maximum contraction while maintaining tension in the glutes.
  6. Slowly bring your legs back to the starting position without letting the weight plates touch.
  7. Maintain a controlled tempo throughout the movement to avoid using momentum.

Common Mistakes

  • Using momentum to swing the weight rather than controlled muscle tension.
  • Leaning too far forward or arching the lower back off the seat.
  • Allowing the weight stack to slam down between repetitions.
