How to Do Wide Stance Leg Presses: Form and Benefits

Master the wide-stance leg press to target your inner quads and adductors. Follow our expert guide for proper form and common mistakes to avoid.

How to Perform

  1. Sit firmly in the leg press machine with your back and head pressed against the padded support.
  2. Place your feet on the platform with a stance significantly wider than shoulder-width and toes pointed slightly outward.
  3. Disengage the safety bars and lower the platform slowly toward your chest until your knees are at a 90-degree angle.
  4. Ensure your lower back remains flat against the seat throughout the entire range of motion.
  5. Press the platform back up by pushing through your heels and mid-foot while keeping your knees aligned with your toes.
  6. Stop the ascent just before your knees lock out to maintain constant tension on the muscles.
  7. Re-engage the safety locks once you have completed your desired number of repetitions.

Common Mistakes

  • Allowing the lower back or glutes to lift off the seat at the bottom of the movement.
  • Locking out the knees forcefully at the top of the rep which transfers tension to the joints.
  • Letting the knees cave inward during the pressing phase.
  • Using a range of motion that is too shallow to effectively stimulate the muscles.
