How to Foam Roller Quads: Technique and Benefits
Learn the correct technique for foam rolling your quadriceps to relieve muscle tension, improve knee mobility, and speed up recovery.
How to Perform
- Place the foam roller on the floor and lie face down with the roller positioned directly under your thighs.
- Support your upper body weight on your forearms in a forearm plank position with your core engaged.
- Use your arms to slowly slide your body forward and backward, moving the roller from just above the knees to the hip crease.
- Identify specific areas of tension or sensitivity and pause for twenty to thirty seconds on those spots to encourage release.
- Shift your weight slightly to the left or right to target the lateral or medial aspects of the quadriceps muscles.
- Maintain steady, deep breathing throughout the movement to help the muscles relax against the pressure of the roller.
Common Mistakes
- Arching the lower back excessively
- Rolling too quickly over the muscle tissue
- Holding your breath during periods of discomfort
