Foam Roller IT Band Guide: Improve Lateral Leg Mobility
Learn how to use a foam roller on the IT band and lateral quads to reduce muscle stiffness, improve recovery, and enhance lower body mobility.
How to Perform
- Lie on your side with the foam roller positioned just below your hip bone on the lateral side of your thigh.
- Cross your top leg over the bottom leg and place your foot flat on the floor to provide support and control the pressure.
- Prop your upper body up using your forearm and hand for stability while keeping your core engaged.
- Slowly roll from just below the hip down toward the top of the knee, avoiding the joint itself.
- Identify any sensitive trigger points and hold the position for twenty to thirty seconds to allow the muscle to release.
- Reverse the movement to roll back up toward the hip in a slow, controlled manner.
- Repeat the process on the opposite leg to ensure bilateral balance and mobility.
Common Mistakes
- Rolling directly over the knee joint or hip bone
- Moving too quickly over the tissue which prevents effective release
- Holding your breath or tensing the muscles instead of relaxing into the roller
- Applying too much pressure for your current tolerance level
