How to Foam Roll Your Anterior Tibialis Properly
Master the foam roller anterior tibialis release. Follow our step-by-step guide to reduce shin pain, improve mobility, and recover faster.
How to Perform
- Begin on your hands and knees in a tabletop position with the foam roller placed horizontally underneath your right shin.
- Shift your weight forward so your right shin is resting directly on the roller, just below the knee and slightly to the outside of the shin bone.
- Place your left foot on the floor or cross it over your right calf to apply additional pressure if tolerated.
- Slowly roll your body forward and backward, moving the roller from just below the knee down to just above the ankle.
- Maintain a neutral spine and keep your core engaged to prevent your lower back from sagging during the movement.
- Pause on any particularly tender spots for twenty to thirty seconds to allow the muscle fibers to release.
- Switch legs and repeat the process on the left side.
Common Mistakes
- Rolling directly onto the shin bone instead of the lateral muscle belly.
- Moving too quickly which prevents deeper tissue release.
- Holding your breath and tensing the body against the pressure.
- Allowing the lower back to arch excessively.
