Master the dumbbell thruster with our expert guide. Learn correct form, avoid common mistakes, and build explosive full-body power.
How to Perform
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with a neutral grip.
- Lower your hips back and down into a deep squat until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor.
- Drive upward through your heels with explosive force to return to a standing position.
- Use the momentum from your legs to press the dumbbells directly overhead until your arms are fully locked out.
- Lower the weights back to your shoulders in a controlled motion as you prepare for the next repetition.
- Maintain a braced core and a flat back throughout the entire range of motion.
Common Mistakes
- Pausing at the top of the squat instead of using leg drive to power the press.
- Allowing the knees to cave inward during the descent or ascent.
- Arching the lower back excessively when pressing the weights overhead.
- Shifting weight onto the toes rather than keeping the heels planted.
