Dumbbell Sumo Deadlift Guide: Form and Benefits
Master the dumbbell sumo deadlift with our expert guide. Learn proper form to target your glutes and inner thighs while protecting your lower back.
How to Perform
- Stand with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart and your toes pointed out at a forty-five degree angle.
- Place a single dumbbell vertically on the floor between your feet, standing it on one end.
- Hinge at your hips and bend your knees to squat down, grabbing the top end of the dumbbell with both hands using an overhand grip.
- Engage your core and keep your chest lifted as you drive through your heels to stand up straight.
- Squeeze your glutes at the top of the movement without arching your lower back.
- Lower the dumbbell back to the floor under control by pushing your hips back and maintaining a flat lumbar spine.
- Touch the dumbbell lightly to the ground before beginning your next repetition.
Common Mistakes
- Rounding the lower back during the initial pull
- Allowing the knees to cave inward during the ascent
- Dropping the chest too far forward rather than hinging the hips
- Using the arms to pull the weight instead of the legs and glutes
