Dumbbell Deadlift Guide: Master the Hip Hinge
Learn the correct form for the dumbbell deadlift to build stronger glutes and hamstrings while protecting your lower back.
How to Perform
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart and place a pair of dumbbells on the floor just outside your feet.
- Hinge at your hips and bend your knees to grip the dumbbells with a neutral grip, keeping your spine flat and shoulders slightly ahead of the weights.
- Drive through your heels to extend your hips and knees simultaneously, bringing the weights up along the sides of your legs.
- Stand tall at the top of the movement by squeezing your glutes without leaning back or hyperextending your spine.
- Lower the dumbbells back to the floor by hinging at the hips first and then bending the knees once the weights pass knee level.
- Ensure the weights touch the floor completely to reset your tension before starting the next repetition.
Common Mistakes
- Rounding the lumbar spine during the initial pull or the descent.
- Allowing the dumbbells to drift too far forward away from the shins.
- Squatting the weight up rather than hinging through the hips.
- Shrugging the shoulders at the top of the movement instead of keeping them packed.
