Cat Plank Guide: Quad Strength and Core Stability
Master the Cat Plank with our step-by-step guide. Learn how to build quad endurance and core tension using this effective bodyweight isometric hold.
How to Perform
- Begin on all fours in a tabletop position with your hands directly under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
- Engage your core by drawing your navel toward your spine while maintaining a flat, neutral back.
- Tuck your toes under and press your weight into the balls of your feet and the palms of your hands.
- Lift your knees exactly one to two inches off the floor while keeping your shins parallel to the ground.
- Hold this static position while breathing deeply, ensuring your hips do not rise and your head remains in line with your spine.
- Lower your knees back to the floor with control to complete the repetition.
Common Mistakes
- Hiking the hips too high which shifts tension away from the quads
- Allowing the lower back to arch or sag toward the floor
- Letting the knees drift too far above the two-inch height margin
- Rounding the upper back or dropping the head between the shoulders
