Calves Foam Roller: How to Release Calf Tension

Learn the proper technique for foam rolling your calves to improve ankle mobility, reduce soreness, and enhance lower body performance.

How to Perform

  1. Sit on the floor with your legs extended and place a foam roller horizontally under your right ankle.
  2. Cross your left leg over your right shin to add pressure or keep both legs side-by-side for a gentler session.
  3. Place your hands on the floor behind your hips and lift your glutes off the ground to support your weight.
  4. Slowly roll from the base of the ankle up toward the back of the knee using your arms to guide the movement.
  5. Rotate your foot internally and externally while rolling to target the medial and lateral heads of the calf.
  6. Pause on any sensitive spots for twenty to thirty seconds to allow the muscle fibers to release.
  7. Switch legs and repeat the process for a total of two to three minutes per side.

Common Mistakes

  • Rolling directly behind the knee joint
  • Moving too fast over the muscle tissue
  • Holding your breath instead of maintaining deep exhalations
