Calves Foam Roller: How to Release Calf Tension
Learn the proper technique for foam rolling your calves to improve ankle mobility, reduce soreness, and enhance lower body performance.
How to Perform
- Sit on the floor with your legs extended and place a foam roller horizontally under your right ankle.
- Cross your left leg over your right shin to add pressure or keep both legs side-by-side for a gentler session.
- Place your hands on the floor behind your hips and lift your glutes off the ground to support your weight.
- Slowly roll from the base of the ankle up toward the back of the knee using your arms to guide the movement.
- Rotate your foot internally and externally while rolling to target the medial and lateral heads of the calf.
- Pause on any sensitive spots for twenty to thirty seconds to allow the muscle fibers to release.
- Switch legs and repeat the process for a total of two to three minutes per side.
Common Mistakes
- Rolling directly behind the knee joint
- Moving too fast over the muscle tissue
- Holding your breath instead of maintaining deep exhalations
