Master the barbell step back lunge to build quad strength and improve balance. Follow our professional guide for perfect form and injury prevention.

How to Perform

  1. Position a barbell across your upper traps and stand with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Take a controlled step backward with one leg while keeping your torso upright and your core engaged.
  3. Lower your hips until your back knee is just above the floor and your front thigh is parallel to the ground.
  4. Keep your front knee aligned over your ankle without letting it cave inward.
  5. Drive through the midfoot of your front leg to return to the starting standing position.
  6. Complete the desired number of repetitions on one side or alternate legs as preferred.

Common Mistakes

  • Stepping back on a tightrope instead of maintaining hip-width distance.
  • Allowing the front knee to collapse inward during the descent.
  • Leaning too far forward and losing neutral spine alignment.
  • Banging the back knee hard against the floor.
