Master the barbell walking lunge with our expert guide. Learn proper form, avoid common mistakes, and build powerful quads and glutes.

How to Perform

  1. Position a barbell across your upper trapezius muscles and grip the bar firmly with both hands to stabilize it.
  2. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your core engaged to maintain an upright torso.
  3. Take a controlled step forward with one leg and lower your hips until both knees are bent at approximately ninety-degree angles.
  4. Ensure your rear knee hovers just above the floor while your front knee remains aligned over your ankle.
  5. Drive through the heel of your front foot to stand up, bringing your rear foot forward to meet the lead foot or stepping directly into the next lunge.
  6. Repeat the movement with the opposite leg and continue moving forward in a steady, rhythmic fashion.

Common Mistakes

  • Allowing the front knee to cave inward toward the midline.
  • Leaning the torso too far forward and losing spinal neutrality.
  • Taking steps that are too short, causing the front heel to lift.
  • Bouncing the back knee off the floor instead of controlling the descent.
