Backward Shoulder Rotation Guide: Improve Posture and Mobility

Learn the correct technique for backward shoulder rotations to relieve tension, improve shoulder mobility, and correct rounded posture.

How to Perform

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms hanging naturally at your sides.
  2. Lift your shoulders upward toward your ears in a slow, controlled shrugging motion.
  3. Roll your shoulders backward by pulling your shoulder blades together toward your spine.
  4. Lower your shoulders back down to the starting position to complete a smooth circular arc.
  5. Maintain a tall spine throughout the movement without leaning your torso forward or backward.
  6. Coordinate your breathing by inhaling as you lift and exhaling as you roll the shoulders down.

Common Mistakes

  • Moving the head forward or craning the neck during the rotation.
  • Using a jerky, fast motion instead of a smooth and controlled circle.
  • Bending the elbows to use the arms rather than moving from the shoulder joint.
  • Holding your breath or tensing the jaw during the exercise.
