Back Lever Guide: Master the Calisthenics Static Hold
Learn how to perform the back lever with proper form, effective progressions, and safety tips for building elite upper body strength.
How to Perform
- Grip the pull-up bar with an overhand grip and pull your knees to your chest, tucking into a ball.
- Rotate your body backward through the space between your arms until your back is facing the floor.
- Lower your hips slowly while maintaining a rounded back in the tucked position to find your balance.
- Extend your legs outward one at a time or together until your body is parallel to the ground.
- Engage your glutes and pull the bar downward toward your hips to maintain a straight line.
- Hold the position while breathing steadily and maintaining full tension across your entire posterior chain.
- Reverse the movement by tucking your knees back to your chest and rotating forward to the starting position.
Common Mistakes
- Allowing the lower back to arch or sag below the horizontal plane
- Bending the elbows instead of maintaining a locked-out arm position
- Rushing the progression before the connective tissue in the elbows is conditioned
