Back Lever Guide: Master the Calisthenics Static Hold

Learn how to perform the back lever with proper form, effective progressions, and safety tips for building elite upper body strength.

How to Perform

  1. Grip the pull-up bar with an overhand grip and pull your knees to your chest, tucking into a ball.
  2. Rotate your body backward through the space between your arms until your back is facing the floor.
  3. Lower your hips slowly while maintaining a rounded back in the tucked position to find your balance.
  4. Extend your legs outward one at a time or together until your body is parallel to the ground.
  5. Engage your glutes and pull the bar downward toward your hips to maintain a straight line.
  6. Hold the position while breathing steadily and maintaining full tension across your entire posterior chain.
  7. Reverse the movement by tucking your knees back to your chest and rotating forward to the starting position.

Common Mistakes

  • Allowing the lower back to arch or sag below the horizontal plane
  • Bending the elbows instead of maintaining a locked-out arm position
  • Rushing the progression before the connective tissue in the elbows is conditioned
