Assisted Chin-Ups Guide: Form, Benefits, and Tips
Learn how to perform assisted chin-ups correctly. Our guide covers step-by-step instructions, common mistakes, and how to scale your back strength.
How to Perform
- Select the appropriate weight on the stack, noting that more weight provides more assistance.
- Place your knees or feet securely on the platform and grasp the handles with an underhand, shoulder-width grip.
- Step or kneel onto the platform and allow your arms to fully extend into a dead hang while keeping your chest lifted.
- Pull your body upward by driving your elbows toward your hips until your chin clears the height of the handles.
- Pause briefly at the top of the movement to maximize muscular contraction.
- Lower yourself back down with control until your arms are fully straight before beginning the next repetition.
Common Mistakes
- Using too much momentum or bouncing off the bottom of the platform.
- Leaning too far back and turning the movement into a row.
- Failing to go through a full range of motion at the bottom.
- Death-gripping the handles which can lead to premature forearm fatigue.
