Assisted Chin-Ups Guide: Form, Benefits, and Tips

Learn how to perform assisted chin-ups correctly. Our guide covers step-by-step instructions, common mistakes, and how to scale your back strength.

How to Perform

  1. Select the appropriate weight on the stack, noting that more weight provides more assistance.
  2. Place your knees or feet securely on the platform and grasp the handles with an underhand, shoulder-width grip.
  3. Step or kneel onto the platform and allow your arms to fully extend into a dead hang while keeping your chest lifted.
  4. Pull your body upward by driving your elbows toward your hips until your chin clears the height of the handles.
  5. Pause briefly at the top of the movement to maximize muscular contraction.
  6. Lower yourself back down with control until your arms are fully straight before beginning the next repetition.

Common Mistakes

  • Using too much momentum or bouncing off the bottom of the platform.
  • Leaning too far back and turning the movement into a row.
  • Failing to go through a full range of motion at the bottom.
  • Death-gripping the handles which can lead to premature forearm fatigue.
