Weighted Push-Ups: Form Guide for Chest Strength
Master the weighted push-up to build a stronger chest and triceps. Learn proper plate placement, technique steps, and how to avoid common injuries.
How to Perform
- Place a weight plate on your upper back or wear a weighted vest while kneeling on the floor.
- Place your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and extend your legs to enter a high plank position.
- Lower your body by bending the elbows until your chest is approximately one inch above the floor.
- Maintain a rigid spine and neutral neck throughout the descent to ensure the weight remains stable.
- Drive through your palms to extend your arms and return to the starting position without locking your elbows harshly.
- Complete the desired number of repetitions while keeping your hips from sagging toward the ground.
Common Mistakes
- Placing the weight plate too low on the lower back
- Allowing the elbows to flare out at a ninety-degree angle
- Dropping the hips which compromises spinal alignment
- Using a restricted range of motion to compensate for the extra load
