Weighted Push-Ups: Form Guide for Chest Strength

Master the weighted push-up to build a stronger chest and triceps. Learn proper plate placement, technique steps, and how to avoid common injuries.

How to Perform

  1. Place a weight plate on your upper back or wear a weighted vest while kneeling on the floor.
  2. Place your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and extend your legs to enter a high plank position.
  3. Lower your body by bending the elbows until your chest is approximately one inch above the floor.
  4. Maintain a rigid spine and neutral neck throughout the descent to ensure the weight remains stable.
  5. Drive through your palms to extend your arms and return to the starting position without locking your elbows harshly.
  6. Complete the desired number of repetitions while keeping your hips from sagging toward the ground.

Common Mistakes

  • Placing the weight plate too low on the lower back
  • Allowing the elbows to flare out at a ninety-degree angle
  • Dropping the hips which compromises spinal alignment
  • Using a restricted range of motion to compensate for the extra load
