Straight-Arm Rope Pull Down Form and Guide

Master the straight-arm rope pull down to isolate your lats and improve back width. Step-by-step instructions and common mistakes to avoid.

How to Perform

  1. Attach a rope to the high pulley and stand facing the machine with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Grasp the rope with a neutral grip and take two steps back to create tension on the cable before starting.
  3. Hinge slightly at the hips and maintain a soft bend in the knees while keeping your chest upright.
  4. Pull the rope down toward your thighs in a wide arc while keeping your arms nearly straight throughout the motion.
  5. Separate the ends of the rope as you reach your hips to maximize the contraction in your lats.
  6. Control the weight back to the starting position until your arms are aligned with your ears, feeling a deep stretch.
  7. Exhale on the downward pull and maintain a rigid torso to prevent using momentum.

Common Mistakes

  • Bending the elbows excessively and turning the movement into a triceps pushdown.
  • Using a swinging motion of the torso to move the weight instead of isolating the back.
  • Shortening the range of motion by stopping the rep before the rope reaches the thighs.
  • Allowing the shoulders to shrug up toward the ears during the eccentric phase.
