Side Dumbbell Trunk Flexion | Oblique Strength Guide

Master the side dumbbell trunk flexion to build a stronger core and target your obliques with our expert, step-by-step coaching guide.

How to Perform

  1. Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in one hand at your side with a neutral grip.
  2. Place your free hand behind your head or flat against your thigh to maintain a neutral spine.
  3. Breathe in and slowly bend at the waist toward the side holding the weight, keeping your hips stationary.
  4. Continue the lateral flex until you feel a comfortable stretch in the opposite oblique.
  5. Exhale and use your oblique muscles to pull your torso back to the starting upright position.
  6. Complete the desired repetitions on one side before switching the dumbbell to the other hand.

Common Mistakes

  • Twisting the torso or leaning forward instead of moving strictly in the frontal plane.
  • Using a weight that is too heavy, which leads to momentum rather than muscle contraction.
  • Pulling with the arm or shoulder instead of initiating the move from the waist.
  • Bending too far past a comfortable range of motion, which puts unnecessary strain on the lower back.
