Side Dumbbell Trunk Flexion | Oblique Strength Guide
Master the side dumbbell trunk flexion to build a stronger core and target your obliques with our expert, step-by-step coaching guide.
How to Perform
- Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in one hand at your side with a neutral grip.
- Place your free hand behind your head or flat against your thigh to maintain a neutral spine.
- Breathe in and slowly bend at the waist toward the side holding the weight, keeping your hips stationary.
- Continue the lateral flex until you feel a comfortable stretch in the opposite oblique.
- Exhale and use your oblique muscles to pull your torso back to the starting upright position.
- Complete the desired repetitions on one side before switching the dumbbell to the other hand.
Common Mistakes
- Twisting the torso or leaning forward instead of moving strictly in the frontal plane.
- Using a weight that is too heavy, which leads to momentum rather than muscle contraction.
- Pulling with the arm or shoulder instead of initiating the move from the waist.
- Bending too far past a comfortable range of motion, which puts unnecessary strain on the lower back.
