How to Do Side Bends with Dumbbells: Form and Tips
Master the dumbbell side bend with our expert guide. Learn the proper technique to target your obliques and strengthen your core safely.
How to Perform
- Stand upright with your feet hip-width apart and hold a single dumbbell in one hand with a neutral grip.
- Place your free hand behind your head or flat against your thigh to ensure your spine remains neutral.
- Breathe in and slowly lower the dumbbell toward the side of your knee by bending only at the waist.
- Exhale as you engage your opposite side obliques to pull your torso back to the starting upright position.
- Maintain a steady tempo and complete the full set of repetitions on one side before switching the weight to the other hand.
- Keep your hips stationary and your chest facing forward throughout the entire range of motion.
Common Mistakes
- Bending the knees or shifting the hips laterally to compensate for lack of core strength.
- Using two dumbbells simultaneously which creates a counterbalance and reduces tension on the obliques.
- Leaning forward or backward instead of maintaining a strictly lateral plane of movement.
- Utilizing momentum or swinging the weight rather than using slow, eccentric control.
