Neutral Grip Lat Pulldown Guide: Form and Benefits

Master the neutral grip lat pulldown to build a stronger back. Learn proper form, common mistakes, and tips to maximize lat engagement.

How to Perform

  1. Attach a V-bar or parallel-grip handle to the cable pulldown station and adjust the thigh pads so your legs are firmly secured.
  2. Sit down and grasp the handles with your palms facing each other, extending your arms fully to feel a stretch in your lats.
  3. Lean back slightly, pull your shoulder blades down, and lead with your elbows to bring the handle toward your upper chest.
  4. Squeeze your back muscles at the bottom of the movement, ensuring the bar remains close to your body.
  5. Control the weight as you slowly return to the starting position, maintaining tension in the muscles throughout the ascent.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions without letting the weight stack touch between reps.

Common Mistakes

  • Using excessive momentum by swinging the torso back and forth
  • Pulling the handle down with the hands rather than driving through the elbows
  • Shrugging the shoulders upward toward the ears during the contraction
  • Shortening the range of motion by not fully extending the arms at the top
