Mountain Climbers: Proper Form and Core Benefits
Master the mountain climber with our expert guide. Learn correct form, avoid common mistakes, and build core strength with this bodyweight exercise.
How to Perform
- Assume a standard plank position with your hands placed directly under your shoulders and your body forming a straight line from head to heels.
- Engage your core to stabilize your hips and prevent your lower back from sagging toward the floor.
- Drive your right knee toward your chest as far as possible without allowing your foot to touch the ground.
- Return the right leg to the starting position while simultaneously driving the left knee toward your chest in a fluid motion.
- Continue alternating legs at a controlled, rapid pace while maintaining a flat back and keeping your weight centered over your hands.
- Focus on exhaling as each knee moves forward to maximize abdominal engagement.
Common Mistakes
- Bouncing the hips or allowing the buttocks to rise too high during the leg transitions.
- Shifting the weight backward away from the hands, which reduces shoulder stability and core tension.
- Resting the moving foot on the ground at the top of the rep instead of keeping it hovering.
- Arching the lower back, which transfers stress from the abdominals to the lumbar spine.
