Mountain Climbers: Proper Form and Core Benefits

Master the mountain climber with our expert guide. Learn correct form, avoid common mistakes, and build core strength with this bodyweight exercise.

How to Perform

  1. Assume a standard plank position with your hands placed directly under your shoulders and your body forming a straight line from head to heels.
  2. Engage your core to stabilize your hips and prevent your lower back from sagging toward the floor.
  3. Drive your right knee toward your chest as far as possible without allowing your foot to touch the ground.
  4. Return the right leg to the starting position while simultaneously driving the left knee toward your chest in a fluid motion.
  5. Continue alternating legs at a controlled, rapid pace while maintaining a flat back and keeping your weight centered over your hands.
  6. Focus on exhaling as each knee moves forward to maximize abdominal engagement.

Common Mistakes

  • Bouncing the hips or allowing the buttocks to rise too high during the leg transitions.
  • Shifting the weight backward away from the hands, which reduces shoulder stability and core tension.
  • Resting the moving foot on the ground at the top of the rep instead of keeping it hovering.
  • Arching the lower back, which transfers stress from the abdominals to the lumbar spine.
