Incline Bench Press Guide: Form, Benefits, and Tips

Master the incline bench press to build a stronger upper chest. Learn proper form, avoid common mistakes, and improve your horizontal pushing power.

How to Perform

  1. Adjust the incline bench to an angle between 30 and 45 degrees and sit with your feet planted firmly on the floor.
  2. Grip the barbell with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and retract your shoulder blades against the backrest.
  3. Unrack the weight and hold the bar directly over your upper chest with your arms fully extended.
  4. Lower the bar under control until it lightly touches your upper chest, keeping your elbows tucked at a 45-degree angle.
  5. Drive the bar back upward in a slight arc toward your face until your elbows reach full extension.
  6. Exhale at the top of the movement and maintain tension in your core to ensure a stable lifting platform.

Common Mistakes

  • Bouncing the barbell off the chest to create artificial momentum.
  • Setting the bench angle too high, which shifts the load onto the front shoulders.
  • Flaring the elbows out wide, increasing the mechanical stress on the rotator cuffs.
  • Lifting the hips off the bench during the concentric phase of the lift.
