Lat Pull Down (Leaning Back) | Proper Form Guide

Master the leaning back lat pulldown with our expert guide. Improve back width and thickness with these step-by-step instructions and tips.

How to Perform

  1. Sit at the lat pulldown station and adjust the thigh pads so your legs are securely locked in place.
  2. Grasp the bar with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. Lean your torso back approximately 20 to 30 degrees to create a clear path for the bar and engage the mid-back.
  4. Pull the bar down toward your upper chest by driving your elbows toward your hips and retracting your shoulder blades.
  5. Pause briefly when the bar is just above your chest, maintaining the slight backward lean throughout the movement.
  6. Slowly extend your arms to return the bar to the starting position while keeping tension on the muscles.
  7. Ensure your torso remains stationary during the ascent rather than swinging forward.

Common Mistakes

  • Using excessive momentum or swinging to pull the weight down
  • Pulling the bar behind the neck instead of toward the upper chest
  • Allowing the shoulders to shrug upward toward the ears during the eccentric phase
  • Grip tension that is cross-dominant, leading to forearm fatigue over back engagement
