Incline Dumbbell Press: Form Guide for Upper Chest Growth

Master the incline dumbbell press with our expert guide. Learn proper form, optimal bench angles, and common mistakes to build a stronger upper chest.

How to Perform

  1. Set an adjustable bench to an incline of 30 to 45 degrees and sit with a dumbbell resting on each knee.
  2. Kick your knees up one at a time to help hoist the weights to shoulder height as you lie back against the bench.
  3. Plant your feet firmly on the floor and retract your shoulder blades to create a stable base of support.
  4. Press the dumbbells toward the ceiling until your arms are fully extended but not locked out at the elbows.
  5. Lower the weights slowly and under control until they are level with your upper chest, maintaining a 45-degree angle at the elbows.
  6. Pause briefly at the bottom of the movement before driving the dumbbells back to the starting position.

Common Mistakes

  • Setting the bench at too steep an angle, which overloads the shoulders instead of the chest.
  • Banging the dumbbells together at the top, which removes tension from the target muscles.
  • Flaring the elbows out 90 degrees from the torso, increasing the risk of rotator cuff irritation.
  • Arching the lower back excessively to compensate for using weights that are too heavy.
