Incline Dumbbell Press: Form Guide for Upper Chest Growth
Master the incline dumbbell press with our expert guide. Learn proper form, optimal bench angles, and common mistakes to build a stronger upper chest.
How to Perform
- Set an adjustable bench to an incline of 30 to 45 degrees and sit with a dumbbell resting on each knee.
- Kick your knees up one at a time to help hoist the weights to shoulder height as you lie back against the bench.
- Plant your feet firmly on the floor and retract your shoulder blades to create a stable base of support.
- Press the dumbbells toward the ceiling until your arms are fully extended but not locked out at the elbows.
- Lower the weights slowly and under control until they are level with your upper chest, maintaining a 45-degree angle at the elbows.
- Pause briefly at the bottom of the movement before driving the dumbbells back to the starting position.
Common Mistakes
- Setting the bench at too steep an angle, which overloads the shoulders instead of the chest.
- Banging the dumbbells together at the top, which removes tension from the target muscles.
- Flaring the elbows out 90 degrees from the torso, increasing the risk of rotator cuff irritation.
- Arching the lower back excessively to compensate for using weights that are too heavy.
