Master the incline dumbbell fly with our expert guide. Learn the correct form, avoid common mistakes, and target your upper pectorals effectively.

How to Perform

  1. Set an adjustable bench to a 30 to 45-degree incline and sit back with a dumbbell in each hand resting on your knees.
  2. Kick the weights up to your shoulders and lie back, extending your arms directly above your chest with a slight bend in the elbows.
  3. Lower the dumbbells out to the sides in a wide arc until you feel a comfortable stretch across your upper chest.
  4. Maintain a constant, slight bend in your elbows throughout the descent to protect the joint and isolate the pectorals.
  5. Reverse the motion by squeezing your chest muscles to bring the weights back to the starting position above your chest.
  6. Stop the movement just before the dumbbells touch at the top to maintain continuous tension on the muscles.

Common Mistakes

  • Straightening the arms completely which places excessive strain on the elbow joints.
  • Lowering the weights too far past the shoulder line and risking rotator cuff injury.
  • Clashing the dumbbells together at the top of the rep which removes tension from the chest.
  • Using excessive weight that forces the use of momentum or a pressing motion.
