Master the incline dumbbell fly with our expert guide. Learn the correct form, avoid common mistakes, and target your upper pectorals effectively.
How to Perform
- Set an adjustable bench to a 30 to 45-degree incline and sit back with a dumbbell in each hand resting on your knees.
- Kick the weights up to your shoulders and lie back, extending your arms directly above your chest with a slight bend in the elbows.
- Lower the dumbbells out to the sides in a wide arc until you feel a comfortable stretch across your upper chest.
- Maintain a constant, slight bend in your elbows throughout the descent to protect the joint and isolate the pectorals.
- Reverse the motion by squeezing your chest muscles to bring the weights back to the starting position above your chest.
- Stop the movement just before the dumbbells touch at the top to maintain continuous tension on the muscles.
Common Mistakes
- Straightening the arms completely which places excessive strain on the elbow joints.
- Lowering the weights too far past the shoulder line and risking rotator cuff injury.
- Clashing the dumbbells together at the top of the rep which removes tension from the chest.
- Using excessive weight that forces the use of momentum or a pressing motion.
