Horizontal Traction Isometry Guide | Lat Strength
Master the horizontal traction isometry to build back density and stability. Follow our expert guide for proper form, steps, and common mistakes.
How to Perform
- Position yourself beneath a pull-up bar adjusted to waist or chest height, or use a standard bar with your feet elevated on a bench.
- Grip the bar with an overhand, shoulder-width grip and hang so your torso is roughly parallel to the floor with arms fully extended.
- Pull your shoulder blades back and down while driving your elbows toward the floor to lift your chest toward the bar.
- Stop when your chest is 1 to 3 inches from the bar and your body forms a straight line from head to heels.
- Maintain maximum muscular tension in your back and core while holding this static position for the prescribed duration.
- Lower yourself back to the starting hanging position with control once the hold is complete.
Common Mistakes
- Allowing the lower back to sag or hips to drop during the hold.
- Shrugging the shoulders toward the ears, which shifts tension to the upper traps.
- Holding the breath rather than maintaining steady, diaphragmatic breathing.
- Failing to keep the chest proud and shoulder blades retracted.
