How to Do Plate Front Raises: Form and Benefits

Master the plate front raise with our expert guide. Learn the proper technique to isolate your front deltoids and improve shoulder stability.

How to Perform

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a weight plate by its sides at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions.
  2. Rest the plate against your thighs with your arms extended and a slight bend in your elbows.
  3. Engage your core and slowly lift the plate forward and upward until it reaches eye level.
  4. Pause for a moment at the top of the movement to maximize tension in the front deltoids.
  5. Lower the plate back to the starting position under complete control rather than letting it drop.
  6. Maintain a neutral spine and avoid leaning backward as the weight rises.

Common Mistakes

  • Using momentum or swinging the hips to lift the weight.
  • Raising the plate significantly above shoulder height, which shifts tension to the traps.
  • Locking the elbows completely, which puts unnecessary stress on the joints.
  • Caving the chest inward or rounding the shoulders during the ascent.
