External Rotation Stretch Guide | Barbell Shoulder Mobility
Master the barbell external rotation stretch to improve rotator cuff health, increase overhead mobility, and prevent shoulder impingement.
How to Perform
- Place a barbell in a rack at approximately chest height.
- Stand facing the bar and grip it underhand with your right hand so the palm faces upward.
- Step forward and pivot your body under the bar until the back of your upper arm rests against the rack or is horizontal.
- Use your left hand to gently guide your right forearm backward, increasing the external rotation of the shoulder.
- Maintain a tall posture with your core engaged to prevent arching your lower back during the stretch.
- Hold the position for 30 seconds while focusing on deep, controlled breathing.
- Slowly release the tension and repeat the process on the left side.
Common Mistakes
- Arching the lower back to compensate for limited shoulder mobility
- Applying excessive force that causes sharp pain in the joint
- Allowing the shoulder blade to shrug upward toward the ear
- Holding your breath which creates unnecessary tension in the neck
