How to Do the Dumbbell Z-Press: Form and Benefits
Master the Dumbbell Z-Press with our expert guide. Build shoulder strength, improve core stability, and fix your overhead pressing mechanics.
How to Perform
- Sit on the floor with your legs spread in a wide V-shape and your spine in a neutral, upright position.
- Clean the dumbbells to your shoulders, holding them with a neutral or slightly pronated grip.
- Engage your core and squeeze your quadriceps to create a stable base against the floor.
- Press the dumbbells overhead by extending your arms fully while keeping your torso perfectly vertical.
- Lock out the weights at the top of the movement without leaning back or shifting your hips.
- Lower the dumbbells under control back to the starting position at shoulder height.
Common Mistakes
- Leaning the torso backward to compensate for poor shoulder mobility
- Allowing the knees to bend or the heels to lift off the ground
- Rounding the lower back instead of maintaining an upright posture
- Holding your breath which reduces intra-abdominal pressure
