How to Do Dumbbell Side Bends for Stronger Obliques

Master the dumbbell side bend with our professional guide. Learn proper form, avoid common mistakes, and build a stronger core with this lateral exercise.

How to Perform

  1. Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a single dumbbell in one hand at your side with a neutral grip.
  2. Place your opposite hand behind your head or resting on your hip to ensure your torso remains unobstructed throughout the movement.
  3. Engage your core and slowly lean your torso to the side holding the weight, allowing the dumbbell to slide down toward your knee.
  4. Lower the weight as far as comfortable while maintaining a tall posture and avoiding any forward or backward leaning.
  5. Use your obliques to pull your torso back to the upright starting position in a smooth, controlled motion.
  6. Complete the full set of repetitions on one side before switching the dumbbell to the opposite hand.

Common Mistakes

  • Using two dumbbells simultaneously which creates a counterbalance and reduces tension on the core
  • Rotating the shoulders forward or backward instead of moving strictly in the frontal plane
  • Using excessive momentum to jerk the weight back up rather than engaging the obliques
  • Arching the lower back during the eccentric phase of the lift
