How to Do Dumbbell Side Bends for Stronger Obliques
Master the dumbbell side bend with our professional guide. Learn proper form, avoid common mistakes, and build a stronger core with this lateral exercise.
How to Perform
- Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a single dumbbell in one hand at your side with a neutral grip.
- Place your opposite hand behind your head or resting on your hip to ensure your torso remains unobstructed throughout the movement.
- Engage your core and slowly lean your torso to the side holding the weight, allowing the dumbbell to slide down toward your knee.
- Lower the weight as far as comfortable while maintaining a tall posture and avoiding any forward or backward leaning.
- Use your obliques to pull your torso back to the upright starting position in a smooth, controlled motion.
- Complete the full set of repetitions on one side before switching the dumbbell to the opposite hand.
Common Mistakes
- Using two dumbbells simultaneously which creates a counterbalance and reduces tension on the core
- Rotating the shoulders forward or backward instead of moving strictly in the frontal plane
- Using excessive momentum to jerk the weight back up rather than engaging the obliques
- Arching the lower back during the eccentric phase of the lift
