Decline Pushup Guide: Master the Upper Chest Builder
Learn the correct technique for decline pushups to target your upper pectorals and shoulders using only your bodyweight and a bench.
How to Perform
- Place your feet on a stable elevated surface such as a bench, box, or step.
- Position your hands on the floor slightly wider than shoulder-width apart with fingers spread for stability.
- Align your body in a straight line from your heels to your head, engaging your glutes and core to prevent sagging.
- Lower your chest toward the floor by bending your elbows at a 45-degree angle to your torso.
- Stop once your chest is approximately an inch from the ground, ensuring your neck remains in a neutral position.
- Press through your palms to return to the starting position by fully extending your arms without locking the elbows.
Common Mistakes
- Allowing the hips to sag or the lower back to arch excessively.
- Flaring your elbows out 90 degrees which increases stress on the shoulder joints.
- Restricting the range of motion by not lowering the chest close enough to the floor.
- Looking upward or tucking the chin rather than maintaining a neutral spine.
