Dumbbell Upper Chest Variation Guide | Effective Incline Press
Master the incline dumbbell press with our expert guide. Focus on the upper pectorals with proper form, bench angles, and safety tips for muscle growth.
How to Perform
- Set an adjustable bench to a 30 to 45-degree incline to target the clavicular fibers without over-engaging the shoulders.
- Sit on the bench with a dumbbell in each hand and rest them on your thighs before kicking them up to shoulder height.
- Retract your shoulder blades and press them firmly into the backrest while maintaining a slight natural arch in your lower back.
- Lower the weights slowly toward the upper part of your chest, keeping your elbows tucked at a 45-degree angle to the torso.
- Press the dumbbells upward and slightly inward toward each other without letting them touch at the top of the movement.
- Exhale during the concentric phase and pause briefly at the peak of the contraction before beginning the next descent.
Common Mistakes
- Excessively high bench angles that shift tension primarily to the front deltoids
- Bouncing the dumbbells off the chest to create momentum
- Flaring the elbows out 90 degrees which increases risk of shoulder impingement
- Locking the elbows out aggressively at the top of the rep
