How to Do Cable Crunches: Form, Benefits, and Tips

Master the cable crunch with our expert guide. Learn the proper technique to build stronger abs and improve core stability using the cable machine.

How to Perform

  1. Attach a rope handle to a high cable pulley and select a moderate weight that allows for controlled movement.
  2. Kneel facing the machine and grasp the rope handles, positioning your hands against your forehead or just beside your ears.
  3. Hinge at the hips slightly to tilt your torso forward while keeping your glutes resting near your heels.
  4. Exhale and contract your abdominals to curl your torso downward, aiming to bring your elbows toward your mid-thighs.
  5. Hold the peak contraction for one second while focusing on squeezing the ribcage toward the pelvis.
  6. Slowly return to the starting position, allowing the weight to pull your torso back up without letting the stack touch.
  7. Maintain a fixed hip position throughout the entire set to ensure the tension remains on the abdominal wall.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the arms to pull the weight down instead of the core.
  • Sitting back on the heels too far which limits the range of motion.
  • Moving the hips up and down rather than staying stationary.
  • Performing the movement too quickly and relying on momentum.
