Learn the proper technique for the upper chest cable fly to build pectoral definition and strength with our professional strength coach guide.
How to Perform
- Set the pulleys to the lowest position on each side of the cable crossover machine.
- Grasp the handles with an underhand grip and stand in the center of the machine with one foot forward for stability.
- Begin with your arms extended at your sides and a slight bend in your elbows to protect the joints.
- Pull the handles upward and inward toward the center of your chest in a sweeping arc motion.
- Squeeze your chest muscles at the top of the movement when your hands reach shoulder height.
- Lower the weights back to the starting position slowly while maintaining tension throughout the chest.
- Keep your chest upright and avoid leaning backward as you lift the weight.
Common Mistakes
- Pressing the weight forward instead of following a wide arc.
- Using excessive momentum or swinging the torso to lift the weight.
- Locking the elbows completely which shifts stress to the joints.
- Setting the pulleys too high which targets the middle or lower chest instead.
