Cable Fly Middle Chest Guide: Form, Benefits, and Tips

Learn how to perform the middle chest cable fly with perfect form. Use this isolation exercise to build pectoral size and definition with constant tension.

How to Perform

  1. Set the pulleys on both sides of the cable machine to approximately shoulder height.
  2. Grasp the handles and stand in the center of the machine with one foot forward for a stable, staggered stance.
  3. Maintain a slight bend in your elbows and extend your arms out to your sides until you feel a comfortable stretch in your chest.
  4. Exhale as you bring your hands together in a wide arc until they meet directly in front of your mid-chest.
  5. Squeeze your pectoral muscles hard at the peak of the movement for one second.
  6. Slowly reverse the motion back to the starting position while maintaining control of the weight.
  7. Keep your shoulders depressed and retracted throughout the entire set to keep the focus on the chest.

Common Mistakes

  • Pressing the weight instead of flying by bending the elbows too much during the concentric phase.
  • Allowing the shoulders to roll forward at the end of the movement.
  • Using excessive momentum or leaning the torso too far forward to move the weight.
  • Clapping the handles together with force rather than maintaining tension.
