Cable External Rotation Guide: Build Stronger Shoulders
Master the cable external rotation to strengthen your rotator cuff, improve posture, and prevent shoulder injuries with our expert guide.
How to Perform
- Set the cable pulley to elbow height and attach a single D-handle grip.
- Stand perpendicular to the machine and grasp the handle with your far hand, keeping your elbow tucked against your side at a 90-degree angle.
- Place a small rolled towel between your elbow and your ribs to ensure the upper arm remains stationary throughout the set.
- Rotate your forearm away from the machine as far as comfortably possible while keeping your elbow pinned to your side.
- Pause for a second at the peak of the contraction to feel the tension in the back of your shoulder.
- Slowly return the handle to the starting position across your midsection under full control.
- Complete the desired repetitions then repeat the process with the opposite arm.
Common Mistakes
- Allowing the elbow to drift away from the torso during the rotation.
- Using excessive weight that forces the torso to twist to complete the rep.
- Performing the movement too quickly and relying on momentum rather than muscle tension.
- Restricting the range of motion by not bringing the arm fully across the body.
