Incline Cable Chest Press Guide: Form and Benefits

Master the incline cable chest press with our expert guide. Learn the correct form, common mistakes, and how to effectively target your upper chest.

How to Perform

  1. Position an incline bench set to a 30 to 45-degree angle in the center of a cable crossover machine.
  2. Lower the cable pulleys to the bottom setting and attach D-handles to each side.
  3. Sit on the bench and grasp both handles, bringing them to chest height with your elbows tucked slightly below your shoulders.
  4. Press the handles upward and inward toward the midline of your body until your arms are fully extended but not locked.
  5. Pause briefly at the top of the movement to maximize peak contraction in the upper chest.
  6. Lower the handles under control back to the starting position until you feel a comfortable stretch in your pectorals.
  7. Maintain a planted foot position and a slight arch in the lower back throughout the entire set.

Common Mistakes

  • Setting the bench at too steep an angle which shifts the load entirely to the shoulders.
  • Allowing the elbows to flare out perpendicular to the torso, increasing joint stress.
  • Clanking the weight plates together by overextending at the top of the rep.
  • Using momentum to jerk the cables upward rather than maintaining a controlled tempo.
