Incline Cable Chest Press Guide: Form and Benefits
Master the incline cable chest press with our expert guide. Learn the correct form, common mistakes, and how to effectively target your upper chest.
How to Perform
- Position an incline bench set to a 30 to 45-degree angle in the center of a cable crossover machine.
- Lower the cable pulleys to the bottom setting and attach D-handles to each side.
- Sit on the bench and grasp both handles, bringing them to chest height with your elbows tucked slightly below your shoulders.
- Press the handles upward and inward toward the midline of your body until your arms are fully extended but not locked.
- Pause briefly at the top of the movement to maximize peak contraction in the upper chest.
- Lower the handles under control back to the starting position until you feel a comfortable stretch in your pectorals.
- Maintain a planted foot position and a slight arch in the lower back throughout the entire set.
Common Mistakes
- Setting the bench at too steep an angle which shifts the load entirely to the shoulders.
- Allowing the elbows to flare out perpendicular to the torso, increasing joint stress.
- Clanking the weight plates together by overextending at the top of the rep.
- Using momentum to jerk the cables upward rather than maintaining a controlled tempo.
